How is xeriscape different from “zeroscape”?

“Xeriscape” refers to a style of landscaping suitable for semi-arid or arid zones.  Xeriscape includes plants that are drought tolerant or drought resistant.  It is centered around efficient use of water, typically done with drip irrigation and mulching.  Drip irrigation maximizes the efficiency of water use by putting water only where plants are, while mulching helps to retain soil moisture (while suppressing weeds and building soil!).
“Zeroscape” is a term referring to landscapes composed only of wood mulch or rock mulch, without any plants.

What USDA hardiness zone is Colorado Springs?

Colorado Springs is considered Zone 5-6.  Hardiness zones classify areas based on their annual average low temperatures.  This information helps in selecting trees, shrubs, and perennials that can tolerate the cold periods we experience in winter.
